PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hello February
February’s name is derived from “Februa,” an ancient Roman festival of purification, highlighting the month’s symbolic ties to renewal and cleansing. The month also marks important transitions in nature, as days gradually lengthen and early signs of spring begin to appear in many regions.
Despite its brevity, February is packed with unique events, historical significance, and mathematical curiosities that make it stand out on the calendar.
As a mathematics teacher I love these mathematical curiosities:
Full Moon: February is the only month that can pass without a single full moon. This occurs roughly every 19 years; the last was in 2018, and the next will be in 2037.
Perfect Weeks: In common years where February 1st falls on a Monday, the month consists of exactly four full 7-day weeks. This most recently happened in 2021 and will occur again in 2027.
Weekday Patterns: February always ends on the same day of the week as October. In leap years, it is the only month that begins and ends on the same weekday
Seasonal shifts contribute to February's reputation as a time for reflection and anticipation.
While reflection looks backward to extract wisdom from what has passed, anticipation looks forward to preparing for what is coming.
I am anticipating attending many of these Encore February events: The Fashion Show, The Butterfly Bash, The New MoteSea.

2025-2026 Social Events** **Watch the monthly newsletter for complete sign-up information** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FEBRUARY ENCORE SOCIAL EVENT AT Mote Science, Education Aquarium Event is Sold Out Plan to join your Encore friends for a fun educational event at the new Mote Science Education Aquarium (MoteSEA) on Thursday February 26 at 2 PM. We have the opportunity to have a private one hour lecture and discussion with a Mote scientist in one of the beautiful new classrooms on the topic of “Rescue and Rehabilitation of Manatees and other Marine Mammals”. Following this, visit the spectacular new aquarium at your leisure. NOTE Unless you are a member or active volunteer, prior to the event you will also need to purchase your timed entry ticket to the aquarium. It is best to do this online because you cannot count on being able to walk up the ticket window and get immediate entry. If you order your ticket more than 30 days in advance, there is a discount. If you are a member or volunteer, you still need to reserve your entry time. There is a nice café in the aquarium if you want to come early and have lunch.
